Devangi completes 3 IWM norms at Spain
Devangi Patankar, made her 2 IWM norms at Spain. Devangi made her Second norm at Benasque and the third and final at Balaguer, both are 9 round norms, she had made her first norm last year.

In benasque her rating performance was 2278 and in Balaguer it was 2397. She won with 2 FM, 1 IM and 1 GM and also drew with 2 IM's. Her biggest upset was GM in the last round of Balaguer Westerinen Heikki of Finalnd. She has also received best women prize and trophy for her performance.

Devangi is being trained at Kunte’s Chess Academy, under the guidance of GM Abhijit kunte.

ROSHAN RANGARAJAN ACHIEVES WORLD RECORD
Roshan Rangarajan of Pune achieved the rare distinction of scoring 267.9 Elo Points in Chess for the quarter April to June 2009. In the process, he achieved the distinction of being the Highest point gainer in the World well ahead of his competitors mostly from the European Countries.

Roshan Played in International FIDE Rating Tournaments held at Thrissur, Palghat, Hyderabad, Sangli and Bangalore.

A communication received from FIDE Headquarters mentions that Roshan is not only the highest gainer of points in this quarter, but the points scored by him is the Highest for any quarter by any player in the world since January 2008.

Roshan is presently being trained at the Kunte Chess Academy, Pune. The support and guidance of experienced seniors like Grand Master Abhijit Kunte, WGM Swati Ghate, WIM Mrunalini Kunte and International Master Prathamesh Mokal has been the driving force behind the success story.

Roshan, a ninth standard student of Bishops School, Pune started playing chess at the age of 10 years. The interest showed by Roshan towards the game combined with effort and determination saw him winning several tournaments in a very short period.

Roshan aims at representing India in the major events. He also aims to achieve the Grand Master Title at the earliest. Roshan, Winner of Pune District age group championships for the year 2008 (in Under-13 Category) and for the year 2009 (in Under-15 Category) is at present guided by the Kunte’s Chess Academy.

Roshan Played 52 rated games in the period April to June 2009. Almost half of the opponents had a rating of over 350 points higher than him. The good games lost against senior and experienced players like Ram S Krishan, O.T Anil Kumar, B.T Murali Krishnan, B.S Shivananda, Vikramjit Singh etc. were eye openers. The drawn games against tough opponents were encouraging. The wins against Stalwarts K Vijaya Kanth at Hyderabad, Rakesh Kulkarni at Sangli, R Kaushik at Idukki, P G Muraleedharan at Palghat were haily satisfactory and rewarding, said Roshan.

Abhishek Kelkar wins 5th Sunday Blitz
Second Seeded Abhishek Kelkar won the 2nd Edition of the Rapid Chess Tournament at the Kunte Chess Academy at Mayur Colony, Kothrud, Pune. This was the Fifth (5th) Event in the series of tournaments held every Sunday. Rapid Tournament held in the month of March was won by WGM Soumya Swaminathan.

The Tournament witnessed keen contest amongst strong chess players of Pune. The top 5 Players had ratings of over 2000 Elo points, which was itself an indicator of the level of competition.

Abhishek was declared winner based on the Bucholtz Tie-breaker system, involving a three-way tie for the first 3 places, with 5 points each from 6 rounds. Abhishek had a median bucholtz score of 16.5 points as against the Second placed Anuprieta Patil with 16.0 points and Chinmay Kelkar with 15.5 points.

Earlier, youngster Roshan Rangarajan created a furore when he defeated a series of rated players including Atharva Godbole, Isha Bhave and the high rated senior player Sunil Barve. He eventually lost to the Winner Abhishek and Top seed Chinmay. With 4 points and median bucholtz score of 15.5 points, Roshan was placed Fourth (4th) in the final standings.

Shri. Mohan Phadke, Senior Coach and well wisher of the game distributed Prizes to the Winners. Shri. Nitin Shenvi was the Arbiter for the tournament.

Chinmay Kulkarni wins again!
Top Seed and defending Champion Chinmay Kulkarni won the 4th Sunday Blitz Open Chess Tournament held at the Kunte Chess Academy, Mayur colony on Sunday. With 4 wins and 2 draws, Chinmay had a Score of 5 points from 6 rounds. In the final round, he defeated youngster Mohit Shenvi. Earlier he drew his game with Abhishek Kelkar and the eventual runner-up Anuprita Patil who had tied on score of 4.5 points each. The 2nd and 3rd places were decided on the Bucholtz Tie breaker system in which Anuprita had 21.5 points as against Abhishek’s score of 21.0 points.

The tournament, the fourth event in the series, is witnessing good level of participation each time. With an average ELO rating of 2069 amongst rated players, the 4th Sunday event was keenly fought till the last round.

Chinmay won the 3rd Sunday Blitz tournament
Top Seed Chinmay Kulkarni overcame the previous tournament winner Abhishek Kelkar in the last round to win the 3rd Sunday Blitz Chess Tournament held at the Kunte Chess Academy, Mayur Colony, Kothrud, Pune. He was declared Winner based on the Buch-holtz Tie-Breaker system after the 1st and 2nd positions were tied on 5.5 points with Amruta Mokal the end of 6 Rounds. Chinmay had a Buch-holtz score of 23.5 points as against Amruthas score of 21.5 points.

With an average player rating of 1931 ELO Points amongst rated players, the tournament witnessed a key fight amongst strong players of Pune. Senior player Shri. Chandrakant Dhongre was placed 3rd at this event.

Abhishek won the 2nd Sunday Blitz tournament
The 2nd Sunday Blitz Chess Tournament was successfully conducted at the Kunte Chess Academy, Kothrud, Pune. Second seeded Abhishek Kelkar was declared winner based on the Bucholtz Tie – Breaker system. There were in all 6 rounds played. Top seed Chinmay kulkarni who earlier drew his game with Abhishek was placed 2nd at this event. The Third place was secured by senior player Chnadrakant Dongre.

Prizes were awarded to the winners at the hands of Shri. kelkar and Shri Indapurkar, well known Chess supporters.

Speaking on this occasion, Shri. P.N. Rangarajan, chief Event Coordinator said that there has been a growing demand from several players to accommodate them for the regular practice cum testing tournament. Accordingly, seats are being added to accommodate additional players. Registration for these vacant seats at the Blitz tournament to be held on 22nd march will continue till Friday, 20th march, he said. Shri. Nitin Shenvi was the Arbiter for the tournament.

First Sunday Rapid Chess Tournament 2009
The rapid and blitz tournament series got to flying start at the Kunte Chess Academy, Mayur Colony, Kothrud, Pune.

24 regular chess players including 15 international ELO rated players and national junior champion WGM Soumya Swaminathan participated in the first Sunday rapid chess tournament.

The event was inaugurated by the CA Shekhar Naniwadekar playing chess match with WGM Soumya Swaminathan. Shri Prakash Kunte, managing trustee of Buddhibal Kreeda trust presided the inaugural function.

Shri PN Rangarajan, Chief event coordinator briefed about the rapid and blitz tournaments planned on all Sundays and complimented the players for showing keen interest in the practice cum testing competition. Registration for blitz tournaments on 15th , 22nd and 29th March 2009 is in progress. All interested players are requested to register at the earliest. Shri Nitin Shenvi was the arbiter for the tournament.

Prizes were distributed by the hands of Pune’s Chess Maharshi Mohan Phadke and Hon. Mandar Deogaonkar, Managing Director. There was in all 5 rounds played. WGM Soumya Swaminathan won the tournament with 4.5 points from five games. The last round was drawn with runner up Shri Chinmay Kulkarni. The third prize was won by Shri Abhishek Kelkar and Shri Sohan Phadke won the fourth prize. From BKT additional prizes were given to youngest player of the tournament Sriram Kumar Iyer (4 year old) and consolation prize to Shri Srinath Krishnamurthy.
